INDvENG semi-finals: Twitter can’t stop with the Lagaan memes

As cricket fans prepare for India to play against England at the T20 semi-finals this Thursday, 10 November, Twitter users have noticed something pretty familiar about this face off…

The upcoming match has garnered widespread online attention by South Asian fans of the game hoping for the match to shape up similar to the story of Bollywood film Lagaan (2001).

Lagaan has cemented itself as a classic sports drama that centers around Indian villagers in the late 1800s and how they defeated a team of British colonisers in a memorable cricket match.

The film’s riveting portrayal of India’s win against the British has garnered laughter riot of responses.

Netflix India also took to Twitter to join the comedic conversation with the anticipation that the semi-final becomes a ‘remake’ of the film.

Of course, as is the case in the Twitterverse, users didn’t stop with the Lagaan memes. The conversation continued with fans creating other comedic takes on the upcoming match.

The Indian T20 side will be playing at Adelaide Oval for their chance to progress to the tournament final.

If successful, India will be competing to win for the second time after 2007 where they succeeded on being the first team to win in the tournament’s history.
