Ep 8: Indian links in Indigenous Australian poet Ali Cobby Eckermann’s life

Reading Time: < 1 minute

To celebrate NAIDOC week 2020 (between 8-15 November) I spoke to Yakunytjatjara poet Ali Cobby Eckermann about her time in India where she taught students and even had her collection of poems ‘Broken by Neglect’ translated into Bengali.

In this episode, you will learn of the First Nations poet’s experience at Jadavpur University, hear of the parallels between the Dalit experience and the Aboriginal experience, and discover more about why NAIDOC is so important.

For those seeking Indigenous Australian literature, Ali suggests the following works:
  1. The Yield by Tara June Winch
  2. Too Much Lip by Melissa Lucashenko
  3. Works of Alexis Wright
  4. Works of Tim Scott

In poetry:

  1. Ellen Van Neerven
  2. Natalie Harken
  3. Karen Wyld
