State of Nostalgia: Kashmir

Reading Time: 2 minutes

KASHMIR

Amit and Anjali share their memories of Kashmir

My homeland, Kashmir, is without a doubt, the most beautiful state in India and one of the most beautiful places in the world. Sadly, it has been riddled with terrorism in the recent past. In 1990, nearly half a million of my people, Kashmiri Pundits, had to flee the state in a mass exodus. The genocide and subsequent displacement have caused much suffering as the uprooted have struggled to resettle themselves.

Today, wherever we are in India, or indeed in the world, we are talking about our struggle in an effort to spread awareness of this unsavoury incident. Hopefully, we will be allowed to return to our beautiful motherland of 5000 years, one day soon.

I come from Kashmir, a valley famous for its Dal Lake and pollution-free resorts, and surrounded by the majestic Himalayas.

The world would be well aware of the decades-old turmoil in Kashmir, which has uprooted and displaced most of my community, resulting in 27 years of hardship and unsettled life for many. Yet the displaced community is working hard to build their lives, without any feelings of revenge, and hoping to go back to their motherland one day. It is this resilience and positive attitude that fills me with a sense of pride for my community.
