A performance of the Indian classical dance Kuchipudi unites Indian seniors for Holi
Seniors in Melbourne were recently regaled with a unique depiction of Holi through classical Indian dance form Kuchipudi. Madhurima Narla, a renowned guest artist from Hyderabad, India presented a special performance at the seniors Holi celebrations held at The Centre in Ivanhoe.
“There are many myths and stories associated with Holi, however it is rare to watch it depicted in classical Indian dance form,” said Nalin Sharda, President of Northern Region Indian Seniors Association (NRISA).
“It was wonderful to see the unique combination of art and storytelling as the dancer used her creativity and art to stimulate the cultural lore behind Holi, Madhurima is a really gifted artist,” said Parminder Kaur, who attended the event with other seniors and friends.
According to Nalin Sharda, the NRISA Holi celebrations this year were one of the largest in comparison to the last few years with over 150 people in attendance. This was made possible due to a generous grant provided by the Banyule City Council.
According to Jenny Mulholland, a Councillor from Banyule, the sharing of culturally diverse traditions, food, dance and festivals provides an opportunity to revel in the vibrant multicultural community that Victorians are proud of. Cr Mulholland was awarded a Multicultural Community Engagement award from NRISA for her ongoing support.
Alan Thompson from Yarra Plenty Regional Library also received the award for his dedication to engaging with the Indian and other senior communities over the years. The Banyule Council and Yarra Plenty Regional Library received awards at an organisational level as well. Mayor of Banyule City Council, Craig Langdon attended the event and offered his congratulations to NRISA for their ongoing efforts in assisting seniors to maximise their independence and maintainquality of life.
At the Holi celebrations there were colours galore witg a vibrant Bhangra performance by Rohit Dhillon and team. This was followed by a peppy Bollywood performance from Jhoom Dance group. MC for the evening, NRISA committee member Davinder Mamik kept everyone engaged.
Tea and snacks were happily consumed as the seniors mingled with each other soaking in the spirit of Holi. NRISA Secretary Santosh Kumar wrapped up the formal proceedings with a vote of thanks before stepping aside to allow enthusiastic senior members to shake a leg to the latest Punjabi and Bollywood hits.
