SUMMARY:The Offbeat Sari
DESCRIPTION:  \nA major exhibition celebrating the contemporary sari. This exhibition unravels its numerous forms\, demonstrating the sari to be a metaphor for the layered and complex definitions of India today. It brings together the finest saris of our time from designers\, wearers and craftspeople in India.\nIn recent years\, the sari has been reinvented. Designers are experimenting with hybrid forms such as sari gowns and dresses\, pre-draped saris and innovative materials such as steel. People in cities who used to associate the sari with dressing up can now be found wearing saris and sneakers on their commutes to work. Individuals are wearing the sari as an expression of resistance to social norms and activists are embodying it as an object of protest. \nFeaturing more than 50 saris by India’s most renowned designers\, the exhibition includes highlights such as the glamourous designs of Sabyasachi\, Diksha Khanna\, Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla\, and Tarun Tahiliani; innovative garments by Anamika Khanna\, Abraham & Thakore\, Raw Mango and Rimzim Dadu; and the iconic hot-pink sari of the Gulabi Gang – a powerful symbol of resistance in India. \nPresented exclusively in Victoria at Bunjil Place\, The Offbeat Sari is a touring exhibition by the Design Museum\, London. Conceived and curated by Priya Khanchandani. \nGET TICKETS HERE: The Offbeat Sari

SUMMARY:Cut Chilli by Chenturan Aran
DESCRIPTION:  \n“Your face is an ancestral mountain\, carved by mothers who dreamed you beyond their lifetime.” \nJamie was abandoned as a baby in Sri Lanka. At least that’s what Katherine told him\, as she raised him in the beach town of Mandurah\, Western Australia. But when Jamie falls for Zahra\, an activist and podcaster who tells him about the shady history of international adoption\, he begins to question his adoptive mother’s narrative and wonders why he’s never seen his adoption file. \nNow Jamie’s heading home\, with a cultural lineage demanding to be felt and a determination to uncover the truth of his past\, all the while with Zahra recording live for her podcast series\, “Decolonising My Boyfriend”. The truth\, however\, is more complicated than expected\, and Katherine fights to cover up an old wound being opened\, one that will reshape their family forever. \nNominated at the 2025 NSW Literary Prizes\, this scorching new comedy from Chenturan Aran is a banquet of cultural identity\, displacement and ancestry. Inspired by pervasive adoption fraud in Sri Lanka\, this is a play about difficult histories\, and how we manage open dialogue to find vulnerability\, truth\, and acceptance. \nGET TICKETS HERE: Darebin Arts

SUMMARY:The Jungle And The Sea
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrom the visionary team behind the multi-award-winning Counting and Cracking – S. Shakthidharan and long-time collaborator Eamon Flack – comes ‘another achievement of sustained feeling and empathy’ (The Guardian). \nWhen an unexpected act of destruction splits her family apart\, Gowrie takes a radical vow of defiance: she blindfolds herself\, refusing to see the world again until her loved ones are reunited. This sets the stage for one family’s epic journey to retain their dignity and safety\, as they live through Sri Lanka’s decades-long civil war. \nGrand in scale and deeply human at its core\, this touching work honours those who endured unimaginable loss – and upheld their capacity for love\, connection and pride\, even amid devastation. Built out of real-life testimonies from the war and woven through with elements of seminal Indian text the Mahābhāratha and the Greek myth of Antigone\, The Jungle and the Sea is a theatrical epic of resilience and the pursuit of justice through love. \nFeaturing live Carnatic music and a cast including Bharathanatyam dancer Anandavalli and Counting and Cracking alumni Prakash Belawadi\, Nadie Kammallaweera\, Shiv Palekar\, Dushan Philips and Rajan Velu\, this evocative theatrical monument is a stirring meditation on survival. \nGET TICKETS HERE: Melbourne Theatre Company
