Created by Tamil-Australian electronic composer\, Vijay Thillaimuthu\, Oblation draws on chanting practices and explores the relationship between vibration and geometry\, mantra and mandala. \nPresented by The Substation\, Asia TOPA\, Arts Centre Melbourne Informed by the rich history of sound creation\, Oblation incorporates creative technologies with traditional melodies and rhythms from South India and Sri Lanka. Featuring singing\, lasers\, projections\, and vibrations\, Oblation is an evocative sonic and visual world premiere. \nOblation creates a restorative and transformative space through visualisation of sonic performance using lasers\, projections and cymatics – the patterns that emerge through response of particles/liquids to sound. Underneath a large-scale three dimensional projection surface\, an expansive web of electronics form a central tower in service of creation and contemplation. \nThe tower is performed in collaboration with Hari Sivanesan’s Carnatic music ensemble\, the traditional music of South India and Sri Lanka. The work elicits the birth of the universe through embryonic shapes and chanting practices. It considers form developing outof the formless\, and explores the correlation between vibration and geometry\, mantra and mandala. DESCRIPTION:  \nBread\, Circuses and Home is a performative installation to unfold at Fed Square\, drawing inspiration from the site of Akhara\, the wrestling ground. \nConsume the sights\, tastes and sounds of Punjab in this vibrant installation and performance series about migration and resilience. \nBread\, Circuses and Home is a free public installation and mini-festival by innovative Delhi-based artist duo Jiten Thukral (Jalandhar\, Punjab) and Sumir Tagra (New Delhi). \nInspired by the artists’ research in Melbourne and their ongoing work with migrant communities\, this work takes its cue from the urgent agricultural crisis faced by Punjabi farmers in India. Year on year\, generational divisions of land\, climate change\, politics and inadequate laws have severely affected Punjabi farmers’ livelihoods\, forcing many to relocate their lives\, including to Australia. \nBread\, Circuses and Home is a collaboration with Melbourne’s diverse Punjabi communities and a celebration of the unique ways that cultures adapt\, survive and transform in the wake of international migration. Created by Tamil-Australian electronic composer\, Vijay Thillaimuthu\, Oblation draws on chanting practices and explores the relationship between vibration and geometry\, mantra and mandala. \nPresented by The Substation\, Asia TOPA\, Arts Centre Melbourne Informed by the rich history of sound creation\, Oblation incorporates creative technologies with traditional melodies and rhythms from South India and Sri Lanka. Featuring singing\, lasers\, projections\, and vibrations\, Oblation is an evocative sonic and visual world premiere. \nOblation creates a restorative and transformative space through visualisation of sonic performance using lasers\, projections and cymatics – the patterns that emerge through response of particles/liquids to sound. Underneath a large-scale three dimensional projection surface\, an expansive web of electronics form a central tower in service of creation and contemplation. \nThe tower is performed in collaboration with Hari Sivanesan’s Carnatic music ensemble\, the traditional music of South India and Sri Lanka. The work elicits the birth of the universe through embryonic shapes and chanting practices. DESCRIPTION:  \nBread\, Circuses and Home is a performative installation to unfold at Fed Square\, drawing inspiration from the site of Akhara\, the wrestling ground. \nConsume the sights\, tastes and sounds of Punjab in this vibrant installation and performance series about migration and resilience. \nBread\, Circuses and Home is a free public installation and mini-festival by innovative Delhi-based artist duo Jiten Thukral (Jalandhar\, Punjab) and Sumir Tagra (New Delhi). \nInspired by the artists’ research in Melbourne and their ongoing work with migrant communities\, this work takes its cue from the urgent agricultural crisis faced by Punjabi farmers in India. Year on year\, generational divisions of land\, climate change\, politics and inadequate laws have severely affected Punjabi farmers’ livelihoods\, forcing many to relocate their lives\, including to Australia. \nBread\, Circuses and Home is a collaboration with Melbourne’s diverse Punjabi communities and a celebration of the unique ways that cultures adapt\, survive and transform in the wake of international migration. DESCRIPTION:  \nIn a two-part conversation\, Hanif Kureishi first will join Julia Baird to discuss his memoir Shattered and the catastrophic accident that changed his life. Julia Baird and Dr Michelle Johnston\, emergency physician and author\, will then share their reflections on the task of writing about broken bodies\, despair and hope. \nHanif Kureishi was nominated for an Oscar for the screenplay of the 1984 film My Beautiful Laundrette\, while his screenplays for The Mother (2003) and Venus (2006) were both directed by Roger Michell. The Buddha of Suburbia (1990) won the Whitbread Prize for Best First Novel\, and his first collection of short stories\, Love in a Blue Time\, appeared in 1997. He has also written non-fiction\, including his memoir My Ear at His Heart: Reading My Father (2004). His works have been translated into 36 languages. \nDr Michelle Johnston is a consultant Emergency Physician who works at an inner-city hospital. Mostly her days consist of trauma and mess. Also\, she writes. \nShe studied medicine at UWA\, and gained her Fellowship with the Australian College for Emergency Medicine in 1998. \nShe believes there is a beating heart of humanity\, art\, and beauty within the sometimes brutal reality of the Emergency Department\, and she has dedicated her career to finding that sweet spot between creativity and critical care medicine. \nBooks are her other oxygen\, and writing her sustenance. \nJulia Baird is a Sydney-based author and journalist. She writes columns for The Sydney Morning Herald\, The Age and the ABC. She is the former co-host of The Drum on ABC TV and senior editor of Newsweek. DESCRIPTION:  \nEncounter the infinite in this new audiovisual experience. Created by Tamil-Australian electronic composer\, Vijay Thillaimuthu\, Oblation draws on chanting practices and explores the relationship between vibration and geometry\, mantra and mandala. \nPresented by The Substation\, Asia TOPA\, Arts Centre Melbourne Informed by the rich history of sound creation\, Oblation incorporates creative technologies with traditional melodies and rhythms from South India and Sri Lanka. Featuring singing\, lasers\, projections\, and vibrations\, Oblation is an evocative sonic and visual world premiere. \nOblation creates a restorative and transformative space through visualisation of sonic performance using lasers\, projections and cymatics – the patterns that emerge through response of particles/liquids to sound. Underneath a large-scale three dimensional projection surface\, an expansive web of electronics form a central tower in service of creation and contemplation. \nThe tower is performed in collaboration with Hari Sivanesan’s Carnatic music ensemble\, the traditional music of South India and Sri Lanka. The work elicits the birth of the universe through embryonic shapes and chanting practices. It considers form developing outof the formless\, and explores the correlation between vibration and geometry\, mantra and mandala.
