SUMMARY:Songs of the Bulbul – Arts Centre Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:  \nBirdsong is fleeting – like dance\, it exists only in the present\, vanishing as soon as it is sung. \nSongs of the Bulbul is a powerful new dance work by award-winning UK choreographer and dancer Aakash Odedra – a moving meditation on freedom\, love and the soul’s search for the divine. \nInspired by an ancient Sufi myth\, the work tells the story of a bulbul trapped in captivity – a bird longing for spiritual enlightenment. As its final moments draw near\, sorrow gives way to serenity; its last song becomes its sweetest. This poetic tale of beauty and sacrifice reveals freedom found only in ultimate release. \n\nSongs of the Bulbul intertwines the graceful yet powerful art of Kathak dance with Sufi storytelling\, creating a dialogue between the intense physicality of Kathak and the spiritual journey of Sufism. Through a seamless blend of classical Indian music\, Sufi poetry and orchestral composition\, the work invites audiences into a transformative experience that transcends both physical and emotional boundaries. \nFrom Persia to the Indian subcontinent\, from freedom to captivity\, Songs of the Bulbul traces the soul’s journey towards divine love and enlightenment. Odedra’s performance poses a universal question: will we remain confined to the material world like the caged bird\, or will we soar toward liberation and unity with the divine? \nGET TICKETS HERE: Songs of the Bulbul

SUMMARY:a river is a witness
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nI remember.  \nIt is a simple and honest act – to resist forgetting – and yet its faculty is one of profound determination\, resilience\, and resistance. \na river is a witness is a solo exhibition of works by Jagath Dheerasekara: a multi-disciplinary artist who\, born in Sri Lanka\, was forced to flee the island in the early 1990s due to his political and human rights activism— a result of the 1987-1990 Southern People’s Uprising. Outside the minds of witnesses\, events of that period remain largely undocumented. Obscured in – and at times\, completely erased from – official history records\, silenced in public discourse\, and left unspoken by many who lived through it. But memory\, too\, leaves a trace.   \nIn this exhibition\, Dheerasekara takes on the role of the archivist: someone who documents\, records\, and recalls memories for safekeeping\, collecting and categorising the intangible and the almost-lost. Only the archive at hand is not one of official record: his is an archive of traces\, silences\, and residue. Of memory and emotion\, of scars and fragments\, of stories passed or carried within. These are the remnants that endure.  \nThe river emerges as a powerful metaphor. It\, too\, an archive and a repository. Of something that courses\, unceasing\, through past and present\, from generation to generation. A witness to time\, and a carrier of what lies beneath. This exhibition reminds us to reflect on what is lost when histories are buried\, but also to take note of that which persists — which refuses to be forgotten – and the value that lies within that ceaseless\, simple\, resilient gesture.  \na river is a witness invites us to reflect on the importance of remembering complex histories— to bear witness\, to honour those affected\, and to challenge the forces that seek to bury them. \nTo insist\, I remember.  \nGET TICKETS HERE: A river is a witness

SUMMARY:Sri Purandara Dasa Aradhana ( SPDA )
DESCRIPTION:For 27 years\, a quiet miracle has unfolded in Sydney — one raga at a time. \nSri Purandara Dasa Aradhana (SPDA) returns on Sunday\, 15 February 2026\, transforming the Regum Function Centre\, Wentworthville into a living\, breathing sanctuary of devotion\, discipline and music. From 9 AM to 2 PM\, voices young and old will come together to honour the saint-poet who gave Carnatic music its very grammar. \nThis is not just a concert. It’s a passing of the torch. \nAcross three thoughtfully curated segments — Navarathna Malika\, the senior-led thematic exploration “PurandarOpanishat”\, and a vibrant students’ segment — the Aradhana becomes a dialogue between generations. Elders lend depth and wisdom; young artistes bring freshness and fearless devotion. Parents listen alongside children. Students absorb not just notes\, but legacy. \nWhat keeps SPDA special\, year after year\, is its spirit. No rush. No spectacle. Just sincerity\, community\, and shared reverence. \nAs the hall fills with music and meaning\, and prasadam lovingly served by nAmadwAr\, the day becomes a reminder of why traditions endure — because people show up for them\, together. \nIf you believe music is prayer\, if you believe learning happens by listening\, and if you believe culture survives through community — this is where you belong. \nSri Purandara Dasa Aradhana isn’t just marked on the calendar. It’s etched in the heart.

SUMMARY:MEETING THE BUDDHA: Australian Premiere of Award-Winning Feature Documentary
DESCRIPTION:  \nInternationally acclaimed feature documentary\, Meeting the Buddha arrives in Australia this February\, offering an intimate\, cinematic exploration of Tibetan Buddhism’s journey into the modern world through one of its most influential spiritual lineages. \nCreated by an international filmmaking team from the United Kingdom\, Germany\, Hungary and Denmark\, in collaboration with venerable Tibetan Lamas\, Meeting the Buddha is produced by The Beautiful Truth\, the award-winning film and storytelling studio known for documentaries that explore purpose\, impact and humanity. \nBlending rare archival footage\, original animation\, intimate interviews and contemporary reflections\, the film traces the extraordinary life and legacy of the 16th Karmapa\, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje\, head of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism\, and his profound relationship with Lama Ole Nydahl\, a young Danish seeker whose life was transformed by a chance encounter with the Karmapa in 1969. \nThrough this bond between teacher and student\, Meeting the Buddha tells a richly historical yet deeply personal story of courage\, friendship and spiritual transmission—revealing how timeless wisdom found its way from the monasteries of Tibet into contemporary life across the globe. \n”Meeting the Buddha is a story of friendship\, risk and transformation\, told across continents and decade\,” says Director Marta Gyorgy-Kessler. \n“It brings together rare archival footage\, animation and intimate interviews to show how a chance encounter in 1969 helped carry Tibetan Buddhism into contemporary life — and why that story still matters today.” \nThe film captures the remarkable presence of the 16th Karmapa—often referred to as a ‘Living Buddha’—from his early years in Tibet\, through exile in India\, to his visionary commitment to sharing Buddhist teachings with the modern world. \nAlongside him\, audiences meet Ole Nydahl\, once a wild young hippy from Denmark who\, as a child\, declared his ambition to become the “Danish champion of mind.” Together with his wife Hannah Nydahl\, Ole became instrumental in bringing Tibetan Buddhism to the West\, helping establish hundreds of meditation centres from Mexico City to Vladivostok and carrying forward their teacher’s vision with unshakable dedication. \nSet against political upheaval in Tibet and cultural transformation in the West\, Meeting the Buddha honours the living transmission of the Karma Kagyu lineage and the enduring relationship between teacher and student that sustains it. \nDirected by Márta György-Kessler\, who first encountered Buddhism through Ole and Hannah Nydahl in 1990\, Meeting the Buddha follows her award-winning documentary Hannah – Buddhism’s Untold Journey\, which screened internationally and was featured on Netflix. \nIn 2025 alone\, Meeting the Buddha has earned 13 international awards at jury-only screenings\, including four Awards of Excellence from the IndieFEST Film Awards\, The Impact DOCS Awards and Docs Without Borders. \nThe Australian release of Meeting the Buddha arrives at a time of growth in Buddhism nationwide. According to the 2021 Australian Bureau of Statistics Census\, 2.4% of Australians—approximately 615\,000 people—identify as Buddhist\, making it the fourth-largest religion in Australia. This marks a significant increase from just 0.8% of the population in 1971\, reflecting decades of growth and the expanding presence of Buddhist practice and communities across the country. Today\, Buddhism follows Christianity (43.9%)\, No Religion (38.9%)\, Islam (3.2%) and Hinduism (2.7%) in Australia’s religious landscape\, underscoring its enduring and evolving role in contemporary Australian society. \nGET TICKETS HERE: \nPerth – 26 February (Event Cinemas Innaloo) \nMelbourne – 3 March (Eclipse Cinema) \nAlbury – 4 March (Regent Cinemas) \nCanberra – 4 March (Palace Electric) \nSydney – 7 March (Palace Moore Park) \nNewcastle – 9 March (Kotara) \nByron Bay – 16 March (Palace Byron Bay)
