Ali’s debut album\, Sunoh\, was an instant success\, establishing him as a prominent figure in the Indian pop scene. In 1996\, he received a Screen Award\, followed by the Channel V Viewers’ Choice Award in 1997\, both for Best Pop Male Vocalist\, for his work on Sunoh. The album remained on the MTV Asia Charts for 60 weeks\, and its song ‘O Sanam’ is considered one of the best Indian pop songs. Lucky went on to release his second album\, Sifar\, third album\, Aks\, both well received by music enthusiasts. \nHis distinctive style\, characterised by his husky voice and ballad-style singing\, and his lyrics explore unique themes such as freedom\, loneliness\, purposelessness\, and wanderings. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe show brings South Indian Traditional Dance to the Forefront of Protest and Performance in Australian Premiere.  \nPowerful solo dance theatre work challenges gendered violence through ancient form and contemporary storytelling.  \nAcclaimed dancer and choreographer Swaroopa Prameela Unni makes her Australian\nmainstage debut with Resistance | ചെറുത്തുനില്പ്\, an interdisciplinary solo\nperformance running at The Blue Room Theatre from 8–11 October 2025. Earlier this year\,\nSwaroopa was awarded a choreographic residency through the Arts and Culture Trust\,\nwhich played a crucial role in the development of Resistance. \nFusing the traditional South Indian dance form of Mohiniyattam with spoken word\, digital\nmedia\, and original music\, Resistance confronts systems of power and gendered violence\nthrough a deeply personal\, culturally grounded lens. This is the first time Mohiniyattam — a\nform often associated with idealised femininity — has been presented in this way on a West\nAustralian stage. \n“Mohiniyattam is often seen as a celebration of idealised femininity—soft\, delicate\,\nobedient\,” says Unni. “Perth audiences don’t often get to witness traditional Indian forms\nlike Mohiniyattam being used in this way: not to preserve an ideal\, but to challenge it.”\nDrawing from both personal experience and broader social issues\, Resistance contributes a\nvital and often absent perspective in national conversations around gender equality\,\nparticularly as they relate to migrant and culturally diverse communities in Australia.\n“My hope is that audiences leave with a deeper awareness of how gendered violence can be\nembedded not only in systems\, but in the most intimate parts of culture—and how art can\nbe a powerful way of pushing back\,” says Unni. \nAbout the Artist \nSwaroopa Prameela Unni is a Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam dancer\, choreographer and\neducator who relocated to Boorloo/Perth in 2024 from Aotearoa/New Zealand. Since her\narrival\, she has presented work at Subiaco Arts Centre\, Scratch Night – Perth Festival 2025\, Adelaide Fringe Festival 2025\, The Blue Room Theatre Season and more. She is also a recipient of the Arts and Culture Trust choreographic residency and Make A Start 2025\nresidency at Lucy Guerin Inc. \nUnni’s practice has spanned Aotearoa and India over more than a decade. She is the\nfounder of Natyaloka School of Indian Dance (Ōtepoti/Dunedin)\, and her choreographic\nworks often explore feminist narratives\, identity\, and belonging through Indian classical\nforms. As a member of a community historically marginalized and labeled “untouchable” within the Hindu caste system\, Vamsi critically engages with oppressive structures and narratives affecting his community.  \nHis recent work includes ‘Star in the Sky’\, a play that poignantly captures the struggles and resilience of Dalit students in Indian universities\, exploring themes of pain\, identity\, and systemic discrimination. Developed under Indian Ensemble’s Idea Development Lab-First Draft program\, the play was a runner-up for the Tata Lit Fest’s Sultan Padamsee Playwriting Award. The play opened on 26th April\, 2025  \nVamsi co-founded OffStream\, a Bangalore based arts collective supporting artists with an anti-caste lens\, and building community around anti-caste histories and imaginations. DESCRIPTION:  \nBlacktown City 2025 Diwali Lights Competition \nBlacktown City’s increasingly popular Diwali Lights Competition is back for 2025\, with residents once again encouraged to light up their homes to celebrate the vibrant Hindu festival of lights. \nBlacktown City is proudly home to many residents from South Asian communities\, and the Festival of Diwali holds a special place in these communities. The celebration has become part of the fabric of Blacktown City\, with lights\, colour and culture shining across our suburbs. \nMore than $2\,500 in cash prizes is on offer for the best-decorated properties across Blacktown City’s five wards. \nPrizes will again be awarded for: \n• Best Street – recognising neighbours who work together to create a festive\, culture-filled\natmosphere. To be eligible\, a minimum of three decorated properties must be entered from\nthe same street. The winning street will also receive a permanent sign acknowledging their\ntitle. \n• Best Rangoli – celebrating the colourful artworks made from sand\, flower petals\, flour or\nrice. Best Rangoli will be judged between Sunday 19 October and Tuesday 21 October\,\nbetween 8 pm and 11 pm\, and is open only to properties that advance through to the final\nround of judging. \nJudging will be based on the overall appeal of decorations visible from the front of each property. DESCRIPTION:  \nBlacktown City 2025 Diwali Lights Competition \nBlacktown City’s increasingly popular Diwali Lights Competition is back for 2025\, with residents once again encouraged to light up their homes to celebrate the vibrant Hindu festival of lights. \nBlacktown City is proudly home to many residents from South Asian communities\, and the Festival of Diwali holds a special place in these communities. The celebration has become part of the fabric of Blacktown City\, with lights\, colour and culture shining across our suburbs. \nMore than $2\,500 in cash prizes is on offer for the best-decorated properties across Blacktown City’s five wards. \nPrizes will again be awarded for: \n• Best Street – recognising neighbours who work together to create a festive\, culture-filled\natmosphere. To be eligible\, a minimum of three decorated properties must be entered from\nthe same street. The winning street will also receive a permanent sign acknowledging their\ntitle. \n• Best Rangoli – celebrating the colourful artworks made from sand\, flower petals\, flour or\nrice. Best Rangoli will be judged between Sunday 19 October and Tuesday 21 October\,\nbetween 8 pm and 11 pm\, and is open only to properties that advance through to the final\nround of judging. \nJudging will be based on the overall appeal of decorations visible from the front of each property.
