SUMMARY:Sangeeta Sandrasegar Atrium Commission
DESCRIPTION:  \nI ragazzi dei millefiori: the flow’rs of song and story is a new artwork exploring ideas of migration and the storied history of plants and colour. \nIn partnership with the Australian Tapestry Workshop\, this spring we are unveiling a new textile installation by artist Sangeeta Sandrasegar working with natural dye expert Heather Thomas. \nSuspended from the ceiling in the open space of the Atrium\, the work comprises panels of silk organza and cotton coloured with plant dyes derived from Indian madder root\, eucalyptus leaves\, and weld and marigold flowers\, among others. \nWithin the fabric\, details will appear\, including botanical illustrations referencing a 16th century Italian tapestry\, the Millefiori Tapestry of Pistoia\, and archival imagery of flower sellers at this site\, on Princes Bridge in the early 1900s. \nThe artwork explores themes of migration and cultural identity through a myriad of ideas – the histories of the production of colour through plant material\, the representation of gardens and plants in classical tapestries\, the craftsmanship behind textiles\, and the story of young immigrants newly arrived from Italy selling flowers in market stalls. \nBringing together these threads\, Sangeeta’s work explores the ways in which we have related to flowers and plants throughout history\, and how cultural connection is embedded in stories of plants within narratives of migration\, hybridity and identity. \nGET TICKETS HERE: https://fedsquare.com/events/sangeeta-sandrasegar-atrium-commission

SUMMARY:Who are these demonesses?
DESCRIPTION:  \nAn exploration of ancestral memory\, defiance and embodied knowledge carried through women and fluid beings who were demonised for their refusal to conform.   \nWho are these demonesses? draws on stories of the Dakini\, witch\, wild woman and ogress who protected the sovereignty of their bodies and their people’s lands. For this\, those in power tried to kill and reduce them to cautionary tales.   \nYet they lived on – in the elements\, in a shawl passed down by a grandmother\, in family and in intuition.  \nIn Who are these demonesses?\, artist Sheelasha Rajbhandari honours intuition\, suggesting that returning to our senses is a radical act of defiance in structures that thrive on exhaustion\, imposter syndrome and isolation. The work tends to an ancient and living presence within us and acts as a refusal to internalise stories that were weaponised to diminish and erase.  \nAbout the artist:  \nSheelasha is part of a growing ecosystem of artists\, curators\, researchers\, designers\, activists\, archivists\, and cultural workers who wear multiple hats and are initiating and sustaining practices beyond formal institutions. Alongside others\, she navigates systems shaped by care\, ancestral knowledge\, and structural difference. Her work goes beyond making or curating; it is about holding space\, resisting erasure\, and imagining new ways of being in relation. She is also committed to reclaiming how stories are shared\, bringing them to international platforms with dignity\, complexity\, and self-determination to shift conversations and redefine terms of engagement. \nGET TICKETS HERE: https://www.artshouse.com.au/events/who-are-these-demonesses/

SUMMARY:MECCA x NGV Women in Design Commission 2025
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning designer Nipa Doshi takes centre stage at MECCA x NGV Women in Design Commission 2025 with A Room of My Own — a striking\, multipurpose cabinet inspired by the Indian kaavad. Intimate\, powerful\, and beautifully considered\, it’s a quiet celebration of memory\, making\, and women’s stories.

SUMMARY:Data Dreams: Art and AI (Museum of Contemporary Art)
DESCRIPTION:Data Dreams: Art and AI at the Museum of Contemporary Art dives deeper into how algorithms\, power and creativity collide. Among the standout voices is artist Christopher Kulendran Thomas\, whose work critically examines technology\, capitalism and identity in a data-driven world. Blending sharp political insight with cutting-edge digital practice\, the exhibition challenges who controls information\, how narratives are built\, and what the future of creativity might look like when machines are part of the process. Thought-provoking\, timely\, and impossible to scroll past.

SUMMARY:Primordial Pulse by Neena Mand (Art Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:  \nPrimordial Pulse is a solo exhibition by Sydney-based artist and academic Neena Mand\,\npresenting abstract paintings that explore creation as a dynamic\, ongoing process. Neena is a storyteller of space and spirit whose evolving practice moves fluidly between cultural\nmemory\, intuition\, and universal inquiry. \nDeveloped through a restrained visual language\, the works balance geometric structure with fluid movement. Using black\, white\, and gold\, Neena evokes depth\, awareness\, and\nemergence\, allowing forms to appear and dissolve across the surface. \nThe Primordial Pulse series traces creation as a continuum — a vibration moving from\nformlessness to form. Neena invites the viewer to pause\, reflect\, and enter this continuum to feel the vibration of creation\, to encounter the spark that arises between rasa and form\, and to experience the living dialogue between creator\, creation\, and observer. \nREAD MORE: https://art2muse.com.au/artists/neena-mand/

SUMMARY:LACRIMA - Sydney Festival
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Princess of England is getting married: across the globe\, designers and artisans race against time to create a wedding gown fit for history. Under a shroud of secrecy\, a Parisian fashion house designs the gown; in Normandy\, lacemakers of Alençon craft its delicate flourishes; in Mumbai\, embroiderers weave shimmering motifs.\n\nThrough intertwining stories\, LACRIMA reveals the hidden human cost stitched into every seam. Director and playwright Caroline Guiela Nguyen combines meticulous research\, theatrical intimacy and cinematic scale in this ambitious production. Split-screen staging\, shifting sets and close-up video capture conjure the feel of a live film\, drawing audiences deep into the urgency and emotional stakes of the story.\n\nPerformed in French\, Tamil\, English and sign language\, with surtitles\, LACRIMA weaves themes of globalisation\, labour and beauty into a gripping and deeply human narrative.\n\nExperience a global theatre event: over three absorbing hours\, LACRIMA reveals the invisible threads connecting us all – and offers you a seat inside a landmark of contemporary theatre.\n\nMORE ABOUT THE EVENT: https://www.sydneyfestival.org.au/events/lacrima

SUMMARY:Raf-Saperra (Sydney Festival)
DESCRIPTION:  \nIf any artist best represents the musical melting pot of South London in 2025\, it’s Adeel Sardar Khan\, better known as Raf-Saperra. Originally breaking out as a filmmaker\, the Streatham Hill-raised firebrand found his musical spark by colliding the Punjabi folk music that shaped his early life with the hip-hop that moved the streets around him. \nBlowing up with the one-two punch of UK garage throwback “N.L.S. (Nach Le Soniye)” and the grimier “Modern Mirza’’\, both featured on his 2023 EP Ruff Around The Edges\, Raf-Saperra has barely paused for breath. Following a standout Boiler Room showcase in London celebrating Punjabi music\, the rap chameleon  released a bold new EP\, Renaissance\, featuring the bilingual banger “Ni Billo”. \nSaperra’s bhangra-laced bangers have stormed dancefloors from Berghain to Glastonbury. Don’t sleep on this superstar in the making. \nGET TICKETS HERE: https://www.sydneyfestival.org.au/events/raf-saperra

SUMMARY:Songs of the Bulbul
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nFrom Persia to the Indian subcontinent\, from freedom to captivity \n\n\n\n\n‘A tribute to my mother “Kay” … my smiling bulbul who left her cage. ’ – Aakash Odedra \nBirdsong is fleeting—like dance\, it exists only in the present\, vanishing as soon as it is sung. \nIn Persian culture\, nightingales or “Bulbuls” are deeply symbolic\, representing the soul’s yearning for unity with the divine. Their songs\, often directed towards the rose\, symbolise the earthly beauty and the divine beloved\, capturing the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment. Songs of the Bulbul is a new dance work by Aakash Odedra\, with choreography by Rani Khanam and music by Rushil Ranjan. Drawing inspiration from an ancient Sufi myth\, the work tells the story of a bulbul trapped in captivity. Bound by its constraints\, the bird’s despair deepens as its final moments approach. Yet\, it sings more sweetly as its end draws near\, delivering one last heartbreaking song before its soul departs. This tale of sacrifice and beauty explores freedom found only in the ultimate release. \nThe work intertwines the graceful yet powerful art of Kathak dance and Sufi storytelling\, creating a dialogue between the intense physicality of Kathak and the spiritual journey of Sufism. Through this collaboration\, the piece seamlessly blends classical Indian music\, Sufi poetry\, and orchestral elements\, inviting audiences into a transformative experience that transcends physical and emotional boundaries. \nFrom Persia to the Indian subcontinent\, from freedom to captivity\, Songs of the Bulbul explores the soul’s journey towards divine love and enlightenment. Aakash Odedra’s performance poses a universal question: will we remain confined to the material world like the caged bird\, or will we soar toward liberation and unity with the divine. \nPresented by Sydney Opera House supported by Manchester Camerata\, Jacob’s Pillow and British Council. Odedra’s performance poses a universal question: will we remain confined to the material world like the caged bird\, or will we soar toward liberation and unity with the divine? \nGET TICKETS HERE: Songs of the Bulbul

SUMMARY:Songs of the Bulbul – Arts Centre Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:  \nBirdsong is fleeting – like dance\, it exists only in the present\, vanishing as soon as it is sung. \nSongs of the Bulbul is a powerful new dance work by award-winning UK choreographer and dancer Aakash Odedra – a moving meditation on freedom\, love and the soul’s search for the divine. \nInspired by an ancient Sufi myth\, the work tells the story of a bulbul trapped in captivity – a bird longing for spiritual enlightenment. As its final moments draw near\, sorrow gives way to serenity; its last song becomes its sweetest. This poetic tale of beauty and sacrifice reveals freedom found only in ultimate release. \n\nSongs of the Bulbul intertwines the graceful yet powerful art of Kathak dance with Sufi storytelling\, creating a dialogue between the intense physicality of Kathak and the spiritual journey of Sufism.
