SUMMARY:Sangeeta Sandrasegar Atrium Commission
DESCRIPTION:  \nI ragazzi dei millefiori: the flow’rs of song and story is a new artwork exploring ideas of migration and the storied history of plants and colour. \nIn partnership with the Australian Tapestry Workshop\, this spring we are unveiling a new textile installation by artist Sangeeta Sandrasegar working with natural dye expert Heather Thomas. \nSuspended from the ceiling in the open space of the Atrium\, the work comprises panels of silk organza and cotton coloured with plant dyes derived from Indian madder root\, eucalyptus leaves\, and weld and marigold flowers\, among others. \nWithin the fabric\, details will appear\, including botanical illustrations referencing a 16th century Italian tapestry\, the Millefiori Tapestry of Pistoia\, and archival imagery of flower sellers at this site\, on Princes Bridge in the early 1900s. \nThe artwork explores themes of migration and cultural identity through a myriad of ideas – the histories of the production of colour through plant material\, the representation of gardens and plants in classical tapestries\, the craftsmanship behind textiles\, and the story of young immigrants newly arrived from Italy selling flowers in market stalls. \nBringing together these threads\, Sangeeta’s work explores the ways in which we have related to flowers and plants throughout history\, and how cultural connection is embedded in stories of plants within narratives of migration\, hybridity and identity. \nGET TICKETS HERE: https://fedsquare.com/events/sangeeta-sandrasegar-atrium-commission

SUMMARY:Who are these demonesses?
DESCRIPTION:  \nAn exploration of ancestral memory\, defiance and embodied knowledge carried through women and fluid beings who were demonised for their refusal to conform.   \nWho are these demonesses? draws on stories of the Dakini\, witch\, wild woman and ogress who protected the sovereignty of their bodies and their people’s lands. For this\, those in power tried to kill and reduce them to cautionary tales.   \nYet they lived on – in the elements\, in a shawl passed down by a grandmother\, in family and in intuition.  \nIn Who are these demonesses?\, artist Sheelasha Rajbhandari honours intuition\, suggesting that returning to our senses is a radical act of defiance in structures that thrive on exhaustion\, imposter syndrome and isolation. The work tends to an ancient and living presence within us and acts as a refusal to internalise stories that were weaponised to diminish and erase.  \nAbout the artist:  \nSheelasha is part of a growing ecosystem of artists\, curators\, researchers\, designers\, activists\, archivists\, and cultural workers who wear multiple hats and are initiating and sustaining practices beyond formal institutions. Alongside others\, she navigates systems shaped by care\, ancestral knowledge\, and structural difference. Her work goes beyond making or curating; it is about holding space\, resisting erasure\, and imagining new ways of being in relation. She is also committed to reclaiming how stories are shared\, bringing them to international platforms with dignity\, complexity\, and self-determination to shift conversations and redefine terms of engagement. \nGET TICKETS HERE: https://www.artshouse.com.au/events/who-are-these-demonesses/

SUMMARY:Resistance | ചെറുത്തുനില്പ് - South Indian Dance production
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe show brings South Indian Traditional Dance to the Forefront of Protest and Performance in Australian Premiere.  \nPowerful solo dance theatre work challenges gendered violence through ancient form and contemporary storytelling.  \nAcclaimed dancer and choreographer Swaroopa Prameela Unni makes her Australian\nmainstage debut with Resistance | ചെറുത്തുനില്പ്\, an interdisciplinary solo\nperformance running at The Blue Room Theatre from 8–11 October 2025. Earlier this year\,\nSwaroopa was awarded a choreographic residency through the Arts and Culture Trust\,\nwhich played a crucial role in the development of Resistance. \nFusing the traditional South Indian dance form of Mohiniyattam with spoken word\, digital\nmedia\, and original music\, Resistance confronts systems of power and gendered violence\nthrough a deeply personal\, culturally grounded lens. This is the first time Mohiniyattam — a\nform often associated with idealised femininity — has been presented in this way on a West\nAustralian stage. \n“Mohiniyattam is often seen as a celebration of idealised femininity—soft\, delicate\,\nobedient\,” says Unni. “Perth audiences don’t often get to witness traditional Indian forms\nlike Mohiniyattam being used in this way: not to preserve an ideal\, but to challenge it.”\nDrawing from both personal experience and broader social issues\, Resistance contributes a\nvital and often absent perspective in national conversations around gender equality\,\nparticularly as they relate to migrant and culturally diverse communities in Australia.\n“My hope is that audiences leave with a deeper awareness of how gendered violence can be\nembedded not only in systems\, but in the most intimate parts of culture—and how art can\nbe a powerful way of pushing back\,” says Unni. \nAbout the Artist \nSwaroopa Prameela Unni is a Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam dancer\, choreographer and\neducator who relocated to Boorloo/Perth in 2024 from Aotearoa/New Zealand. Since her\narrival\, she has presented work at Subiaco Arts Centre\, Scratch Night – Perth Festival 2025\, Adelaide Fringe Festival 2025\, The Blue Room Theatre Season and more. She is also a recipient of the Arts and Culture Trust choreographic residency and Make A Start 2025\nresidency at Lucy Guerin Inc. \nUnni’s practice has spanned Aotearoa and India over more than a decade. She is the\nfounder of Natyaloka School of Indian Dance (Ōtepoti/Dunedin)\, and her choreographic\nworks often explore feminist narratives\, identity\, and belonging through Indian classical\nforms. Resistance | ചെറുത്തുനില്പ് was first premiered in 2019 in Aotearoa and is her\nmost personal work to date. \nGET TICKETS HERE: https://blueroom.org.au/events/resistance/

SUMMARY:Indian Film Festival of Sydney
DESCRIPTION:Sydney’s big Bollywood moment is back and it’s serving up a cinematic feast! 🎬 After a brief hiatus\, the Indian Film Festival of Sydney is returning this October for three days of unforgettable storytelling\, and it’s kicking off in style with Full Plate\, the latest film by acclaimed actor-turned-director Tannishtha Chatterjee. \nStarring Kirti Kulhari\, with Sharib Hashmi\, Monica Dogra\, and Indraneil Sengupta\, Full Plate has already created a buzz after being selected for the Busan International Film Festival. The film follows a Muslim homemaker in Mumbai whose world is turned upside down when her husband’s accident pushes her to earn a living sparking both personal transformation and tension at home. \nTannishtha calls opening the festival “a full-circle moment\,” saying the film was born out of grit\, hope\, and some of the toughest chapters of her life. Festival director Mitu Bhowmick Lange AM agrees: “Full Plate” isn’t just a film it’s a testament to why Indian cinema matters: it entertains\, challenges\, and heals. \nBeyond the opening night\, expect over 15 films across languages and genres\, panel discussions\, filmmaker Q&As\, and plenty of opportunities to soak up the magic of Indian cinema. Whether you’re a die-hard film buff or just love a good story\, this festival is shaping up to be a three-day celebration of culture\, creativity\, and community.

SUMMARY:Come Eat With Me కమ్ ఈట్ విత్ మీ
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n‘Come Eat With Me’ is an interdisciplinary theatre performance exploring the layered relationship between caste and food\, culminating in a shared meal. \nThrough Dalit stories\, histories and everyday resistance\, ‘Come Eat With Me’ invites you on a sensory and emotional journey that unpacks themes of oppression and solidarity\, grief and joy and the resilience of Oppressed Caste communities. \nIntimate and participatory\, ‘Come Eat With Me’ is rooted in lived experience and collective memory. The performance transforms the act of inter and intra-communal eating – a practice often shaped by caste hierarchies – into a space for reflection\, connection and community building. \nConcluding with a shared meal\, this powerful and immersive experience reveals how culinary traditions can carry both historical trauma and the quiet triumphs of survival and resistance. \nShow Duration: 90 minutes\, followed by dinner \nDinner Menu:\nChicken Curry\nAndhra Style Lentil Soup (Vegan)\nWhite Steamed Rice \nDietary Requirements:\nIf you have any food allergies or any special dietary requirements\, please advise when purchasing your ticket. \nSeating:\nFloor and chair seating \nAccessibility:\nPlease let us know of any accessibility requirements when purchasing your ticket. \nWarnings: \nThemes of death\, murder\, discrimination and physical\, emotional and social violence. Lights change colours and intensity. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the artist \nSri Vamsi Matta\, or simply Vamsi\, is a Bangalore-based interdisciplinary theatre artist whose work is deeply informed by his Dalit identity\, experiences\, and the socio-political context of his location. As a member of a community historically marginalized and labeled “untouchable” within the Hindu caste system\, Vamsi critically engages with oppressive structures and narratives affecting his community.  \nHis recent work includes ‘Star in the Sky’\, a play that poignantly captures the struggles and resilience of Dalit students in Indian universities\, exploring themes of pain\, identity\, and systemic discrimination. Developed under Indian Ensemble’s Idea Development Lab-First Draft program\, the play was a runner-up for the Tata Lit Fest’s Sultan Padamsee Playwriting Award. The play opened on 26th April\, 2025  \nVamsi co-founded OffStream\, a Bangalore based arts collective supporting artists with an anti-caste lens\, and building community around anti-caste histories and imaginations. He also co-founded Perishable Goods Collective\, a transdisciplinary artist collective using food and art to challenge caste oppression and reclaim marginalized cultural narratives.  \nGET TICKETS HERE: https://c-a-c.com.au/come-eat-with-me/
