SUMMARY:BACK TO BILO - Queensland Theatre
DESCRIPTION:  \nWritten by Katherine Lyall-Watson\nDirected by Caroline Dunphy\nOriginal Concept by Matt Scholten \nA true-life testimony to people power and persistence. \nPriya and Nades left war-torn Sri Lanka and found each other in regional Queensland. They married\, had two daughters\, worked hard and settled into a simple but happy country life. \nThe community welcomed them with open arms — but four years later came a knock at the door and they were ripped away in a dawn raid. \nTheir story could have ended there\, but a brave band of Biloela women weren’t giving up on them so easily. \nFighting alongside the young refugee family\, they launched a grassroots\, people-powered campaign that galvanised hundreds of thousands of ordinary Australians to demand the family be brought back to Bilo. This is the remarkable true account of one family’s ordeal in the nightmare limbo of immigration detention\, a story of how love is stronger than fear and of how persistence and togetherness can win against crushing odds. \nBack to Bilo is a profoundly moving new play from celebrated local company Belloo Creative (Boy\, Lost) and is made with — and from — the heart of regional Queensland. \n“A must-see production about the triumph of the human spirit and the power of community.” \nGET TICKETS HERE: https://queenslandtheatre.com.au/plays/back-to-bilo

SUMMARY:Sangeeta Sandrasegar Atrium Commission
DESCRIPTION:  \nI ragazzi dei millefiori: the flow’rs of song and story is a new artwork exploring ideas of migration and the storied history of plants and colour. \nIn partnership with the Australian Tapestry Workshop\, this spring we are unveiling a new textile installation by artist Sangeeta Sandrasegar working with natural dye expert Heather Thomas. \nSuspended from the ceiling in the open space of the Atrium\, the work comprises panels of silk organza and cotton coloured with plant dyes derived from Indian madder root\, eucalyptus leaves\, and weld and marigold flowers\, among others. \nWithin the fabric\, details will appear\, including botanical illustrations referencing a 16th century Italian tapestry\, the Millefiori Tapestry of Pistoia\, and archival imagery of flower sellers at this site\, on Princes Bridge in the early 1900s. \nThe artwork explores themes of migration and cultural identity through a myriad of ideas – the histories of the production of colour through plant material\, the representation of gardens and plants in classical tapestries\, the craftsmanship behind textiles\, and the story of young immigrants newly arrived from Italy selling flowers in market stalls. \nBringing together these threads\, Sangeeta’s work explores the ways in which we have related to flowers and plants throughout history\, and how cultural connection is embedded in stories of plants within narratives of migration\, hybridity and identity. \nGET TICKETS HERE: https://fedsquare.com/events/sangeeta-sandrasegar-atrium-commission

SUMMARY:Suraj Kolarkar: My Indian Childhood - Sydney Fringe Festival
DESCRIPTION:Multi award-winning comedian and actor Suraj’s (Netflix\, Apple TV) magnetic stage presence\, sharp wit & captivating storytelling has sold out shows and collected 7m+ views on Instagram.\n‘Hilarious.’ Scenestr\nStand-up comedian\, podcast host and actor Suraj Kolarkar (Netflix\, Apple TV\, SBS) is back with his fourth solo show! \nWhat’s your earliest memory? I have friends who say they remember stuff from when they were 2\, but I think they’re lying. I spent the first 11 years of my life in India\, then moved to Australia (with family of course. I wasn’t the most independent 11-year-old in history making a solo move across the world). I don’t remember much before I was 5 or 6. But those 5 years from 6 to 11 were very interesting and are the contents of this show (along with my crazy family that raised me… if you’re reading this\, love you guys). \nSo let’s gather and reminisce\, about my childhood (definitely) and yours (maybe). \nMulti award-winning comedian and host of the My First Year in Australia podcast (SBS) Suraj never fails to keep the audience in stitches as he delivers observations from the hilarity in the everyday to his own identity. \nWith a magnetic stage presence\, sharp wit and captivating storytelling that has sold out shows and collected over seven million views on his comedy clips on Instagram\, you won’t want to miss Suraj with his brand-new show! \n‘His sharp observational wit and outsider perspective is simultaneously educational and entertaining…. the gags are all gold.’ – Eventalaide \n‘Hilarious… self-deprecating humour\, a love of word-play\, observations of absurdities and inconsistencies only visible to an outside eye. A hidden gem.’ – Scenestr \nGet your ticket here: https://sydneyfringe.com/events/suraj-kolarkar-my-indian-childhood/

SUMMARY:Sid Pattni: A Knot in the Thread
DESCRIPTION:Flinders Lane Gallery is delighted to be exhibiting the first Melbourne solo exhibition for award winning emerging artist\, Sid Pattni\, who was the recipient of the 2024 FLG Emerging Artist Award. \nA Knot in the Thread continues Pattni’s interrogation of how colonial aesthetics continue to shape diasporic self-perception. His intricately layered canvases borrow visual languages from Mughal miniatures\, Company paintings\, and botanical illustrations\, not in homage\, but as a form of critical reclaiming. They attempt to reassemble fractured histories\, to acknowledge how images once used to categorise and control can be repurposed to tell stories of resilience\, hybridity and becoming.

SUMMARY:And What Will People Say? - Sydney Fringe Festival
DESCRIPTION:A powerful fusion of Indian dance\, music\, and poetry\, this immersive theatre work confronts domestic violence with raw honesty\, cultural depth\, and the courage to discuss uncomfortable truths.\nWhat happens when silence is survival—but speaking out is freedom? \nAnd What Will People Say? is an electrifying 60-minute immersive theatre experience that blends Indian dance\, original music\, and spoken word to explore the unspoken realities of domestic violence within families and communities. Told through the eyes of a mother and her children\, this powerful piece invites audiences into a deeply personal journey of love\, fear\, shame\, and resilience. \nRooted in real experiences and shaped by the voices too often left out of the conversation\, the production challenges cultural stigma and generational silence. It exposes the hidden stories that echo behind closed doors\, those shaped not only by violence itself\, but by the social pressures that keep people quiet. It is a story of pain but also of courage\, hope\, and radical truth-telling. \nCombining traditional storytelling with a bold contemporary narrative\, this show is a call to listen and a call to act. Through immersive staging\, live performance\, and a hauntingly beautiful original score\, audiences are not just spectators\, they are witnesses. \nWhether you’ve lived this story\, know someone who has\, or are just beginning to understand the complexities of domestic violence\, And What Will People Say? offers a space for reflection\, recognition\, and connection. \nThis is more than theatre. This is a conversation our communities need to have. And it starts here. \nContent Note: This production contains references to domestic violence. \nAccessibility: TBC \nGet your tickets here: https://sydneyfringe.com/events/and-what-will-people-say/
