SUMMARY:Cut Chilli by Chenturan Aran
DESCRIPTION:  \n“Your face is an ancestral mountain\, carved by mothers who dreamed you beyond their lifetime.” \nJamie was abandoned as a baby in Sri Lanka. At least that’s what Katherine told him\, as she raised him in the beach town of Mandurah\, Western Australia. But when Jamie falls for Zahra\, an activist and podcaster who tells him about the shady history of international adoption\, he begins to question his adoptive mother’s narrative and wonders why he’s never seen his adoption file. \nNow Jamie’s heading home\, with a cultural lineage demanding to be felt and a determination to uncover the truth of his past\, all the while with Zahra recording live for her podcast series\, “Decolonising My Boyfriend”. The truth\, however\, is more complicated than expected\, and Katherine fights to cover up an old wound being opened\, one that will reshape their family forever. \nNominated at the 2025 NSW Literary Prizes\, this scorching new comedy from Chenturan Aran is a banquet of cultural identity\, displacement and ancestry. Inspired by pervasive adoption fraud in Sri Lanka\, this is a play about difficult histories\, and how we manage open dialogue to find vulnerability\, truth\, and acceptance. \nGET TICKETS HERE: Darebin Arts

SUMMARY:And What Will People Say by Amani Mahmoud
DESCRIPTION:  \nA powerful fusion of Indian dance\, music\, and poetry\, this immersive theatre work confronts domestic violence with raw honesty\, cultural depth\, and the courage to discuss uncomfortable truths. Winner of two Sydney Fringe 2025 awards — Best in Category (Spoken Word) and Best Emerging Producer — this acclaimed production has moved audiences across communities and sparked vital conversations. \nWhat happens when silence is survival — but speaking out is freedom? \nAnd What Will People Say? is an electrifying 60-minute immersive theatre experience that blends Indian dance\, original music\, and spoken word to explore the unspoken realities of domestic violence within families and communities. Told through the eyes of a mother and her children\, this powerful piece invites audiences into a deeply personal journey of love\, fear\, shame\, and resilience. \nRooted in real experiences and shaped by the voices too often left out of the conversation\, the production challenges cultural stigma and generational silence. It exposes the hidden stories that echo behind closed doors—those shaped not only by violence itself\, but by the social pressures that keep people quiet. It is a story of pain but also of courage\, hope\, and radical truth-telling. \nThis is more than theatre. This is a conversation our communities need to have. And it starts here. \nGET TICKETS HERE: fortyfive downstairs

SUMMARY:Temple of Desire
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nEnter the Temple of Desire: where the sensual meets the sacred \n\n\n\nFresh from award-winning\, sold-out seasons in Melbourne and Toronto\, 16 dancers beckon us into a visually stunning world of beauty and desire. Drawing from their training in the classical Indian dance form of Bharatanātyam\, they rediscover a pre-colonial world where the divine and the sensual unite with splendour and power. A celebratory world where pleasure and joy (കാമ / kāma) are not forbidden but are pathways to liberation (മോക്ഷ / mōksha). \nAnchored in a moving acknowledgement of tradition\, colonial loss\, and gendered oppression\, Temple of Desire is an uplifting journey that embraces alternative histories and liberatory futures. Teeming with tradition\, yet subversive and unbound\, it leads us to a place of beauty\, euphoria\, joy and deeper human understanding. \nSumptuous and unapologetically queer\, Temple of Desire is performance as resistance: intimate\, urgent\, and alive with beauty and joy. \nTemple of Desire builds on a decade of acclaimed\, boundary-shifting dance by Karma Dance including In Plain Sanskrit (2015)\, Bent Bollywood (2018)\, Third Nature (2018)\, Kāla (2019)\, Narasimha (2022)\, and Mōhini (2023). \nAnd on closing night\, the temple transforms. \nThe final performance (closing night) flows straight into Temple of Desire: The After Party and you’re invited! DJ Goddess Naavikaran will bathe the Sydney Opera House foyer in remixes of pop\, Carnatic\, Bollywood and deconstructed club. Join performers and the audience for one final celebration of our histories\, futures\, dreams and desires: a collective liberation! \nGET TICKETS HERE: Temple of Desire | Sydney Opera House

SUMMARY:Camp Darwin
DESCRIPTION:  \nCamp Darwin is a new play written by Gisborne-based South Asian writer\, actor\, director and teacher Arjun Raina\, and based on his personal experience of being held in quarantine at The National Centre for Resilience\, Darwin during the height of the COVID Pandemic. \nCast: Matt Barbetti\, Angela Down\, David Farrington\, Lillian Gutteridge\, Peter Gutteridge\, Kim Johnson\, Kate Lawrence\, Kate de Prada\, Luca Romani\, Ivan Sun\, Martin Thomas\, Hem Tiwary \nAbout ‘Camp Darwin’\, a story of human resilience \nA hundred and fifty Australian Citizens and Residents return by a Government aided Qantas flight to Darwin after having been stuck in India for over a year and more. They are taken to the Howard Springs Quarantine Facility in Darwin\, Northern Territory. At the Quarantine Centre we meet six of them\, Raminder and Dalip\, both of Indian origin\, Peter Xu\, a Chinese Australian and Jack\, Larry\, and Chris\, Australians of Anglo-Saxon heritage. \nWelcomed and escorted by members of the Australian Defence Force\, they are housed in steel dongas with little porches on which they are allowed to sit masked\, to protect the wider community from their potentially virus infected bodies and breath. For fourteen days\, these six characters live their restricted lives in these dongas and porches\, being tested for Covid three times\, each test bringing the threat of a positive result\, leading to being moved to the mysterious ‘red zone.’ The living out of the lives of these six characters in the restrictive\, and at times oppressive regime of the Quarantine Centre\, and within the greater threat and stress of the Coronavirus Pandemic\, offers a deeply empathetic insight into the human drama being played out with the lives of Australians desperate to return home to their families and loved ones. \nThe gruelling testing regime\, the surveillance systems and presence of Cops and Guards\, the intimacy between strangers\, sporadic explosions of humour\, of dance\, of laughter\, the moments of great stress\, anger and breakdown\, all lead the drama to its climax when on the last day one of the six men tests positive.
