SUMMARY:Rithika Merchant - Triennial (QAGOMA)
DESCRIPTION:  \nSeventy artists\, collectives and projects from more than 30 countries feature in the eleventh chapter of the flagship Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) exhibition series\, the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. \nRithika Merchant:  \nMeet Triennial artist Rithika Merchant. \nFrom Mumbai\, India\, Merchant crafts vivid worlds where mythology\, science\, and speculative fiction intertwine. Her work brims with creatures and symbols that form her personal visual vocabulary. \nFor the Triennial\, her latest series\, ‘Terraformation’ 2022–23\, envisions beings venturing beyond Earth\, reshaping new planets into habitable realms. The fantasy softly veils the reality of our own threatened world\, where the eventual need to seek survival elsewhere in the universe seems as impossible as living harmoniously together in our present. \nShe has us wondering… in imagining far-off possibilities\, perhaps we can reimagine our own world\, here in the present? \nStep into Merchant’s otherworldly watercolours at QAG\, and let your imagination take flight. \nP.S. 🚀 Little dreamers can help shape new worlds in ‘If the Seeds Chose Where to Grow’ 2024\, an enchanting interactive at GOMA’s Children’s Art Centre. \nThe Triennial is free entry. \nFIND OUT MORE HERE: Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art

SUMMARY:The Substation- Oblation
DESCRIPTION:  \nEncounter the infinite in this new audiovisual experience. Created by Tamil-Australian electronic composer\, Vijay Thillaimuthu\, Oblation draws on chanting practices and explores the relationship between vibration and geometry\, mantra and mandala. \nPresented by The Substation\, Asia TOPA\, Arts Centre Melbourne Informed by the rich history of sound creation\, Oblation incorporates creative technologies with traditional melodies and rhythms from South India and Sri Lanka. Featuring singing\, lasers\, projections\, and vibrations\, Oblation is an evocative sonic and visual world premiere. \nOblation creates a restorative and transformative space through visualisation of sonic performance using lasers\, projections and cymatics – the patterns that emerge through response of particles/liquids to sound. Underneath a large-scale three dimensional projection surface\, an expansive web of electronics form a central tower in service of creation and contemplation. \nThe tower is performed in collaboration with Hari Sivanesan’s Carnatic music ensemble\, the traditional music of South India and Sri Lanka. The work elicits the birth of the universe through embryonic shapes and chanting practices. It considers form developing outof the formless\, and explores the correlation between vibration and geometry\, mantra and mandala. Forging connection through (and despite) sacrifice\, together we encounter the infinite\, developing a throughline from the ancient to the emergent. \nGET TICKETS HERE: Oblation — 4–8 March 2025 — The Substation
