SUMMARY:Avatar: Forms of Vishnu
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis captivating exhibition brings together centuries of art and storytelling from South and Southeast Asia celebrating Vishnu\, the Hindu deity who preserves order in the universe. \nAvatar\, meaning ‘descent’ in Sanskrit\, describes the many forms Vishnu takes to descend from the heavens to restore balance on earth. In sculpture\, painting\, textiles\, photographs and film\, the exhibition traces the ways artists have envisioned Vishnu’s various avatars\, including Matsya the fish\, Kurma the tortoise\, the beloved Krishna\, the noble prince Rāma\, and Kalki\, the future avatar who will bring renewal. \nBrimming with tales of heroism\, love and devotion\, the exhibition presents exceptional historical and contemporary art from renowned collections in Australia\, India\, Cambodia\, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It also introduces new works created especially for the exhibition by artists Desmond Lazaro\, Gitanjali Das\, Kalam Patua and Sumakshi Singh. \nAvatar: Forms of Vishnu will be accompanied by a richly illustrated publication featuring essays by writers from across the globe. \nGET TICKETS HERE: Avatar | Art Gallery of NSW

SUMMARY:Wholly glory Raghav Handa and James Peter Brown
DESCRIPTION:  \nWholly glory by choreographer and dancer Raghav Handa and composer James Peter Brown responds to Vive l’Empereur! 1891 by Édouard Detaille – a monumental painting on display in the Art Gallery’s Grand Courts that captures the splendour of Napoleon’s cavalry. \nDrawing on visual research\, historical documentation and the dressage ring\, Wholly glory interrogates the cost of allegiance\, the construct of heroism and the mechanisms by which power is remembered and romanticised. The work\, which is still in development\, engages these themes by examining the bond that exists between a lancer and his charger – their trust and comradery\, life and death relationship\, their beauty. \nThis presentation concludes Raghav Handa’s 2025 artist residency at the Art Gallery\, designed to support choreographic research of the collection. Stay for a Q&A with the artists after the performance. \n\n\nWednesday 6 August 2025 at 7.30pm \n\nDuration 1 hour \n\nVenue: Art Gallery of New South Wales\, Naala Badu building\, Lower level 2\, Meers Hall \n\n\nFree\, bookings required
