They are the unsung heroes of the community, people whose kindness, generosity and helpfulness is legendary. They are respected because they go out of their way to help others, tirelessly and without complaint.

Do you know such a person? Here’s your opportunity to reward them for their involvement and commitment to the community.

Nominate your local ‘heritage hero’ to be felicitated in this year’s NSW Government Heritage Volunteer Awards. In a recently released press release, Heritage Minister Robyn Parker invited the community to nominate their local hero to be a recipient of this award. These awards recognise the exceptional contribution to heritage conservation, management and promotion made by individuals and community organisations.

“These awards offer local communities the chance to pay tribute to the wonderful work being undertaken by volunteers”, Ms Parker said.

“Volunteers contribute to conserving heritage in a variety of ways from education, fundraising, historical research, physical conservation and the undertaking of surveys”, she added.

Nominations are welcome from a wide range of sources –from community groups, individuals, heritage consultants, local councils, conservation and heritage organisations and government agencies.

The awards are presented within the following ten categories:

  • Aboriginal Heritage;
  • Archaeological Heritage;
  • Built Heritage;
  • Cultural Heritage;
  • Engineering Heritage;
  • Landscape and Garden Heritage;
  • Maritime Heritage;
  • Moveable Heritage;
  • Multicultural Heritage; and
  • Natural Heritage.

The nomination form and list of criteria for the 2014 NSW Government Heritage Volunteers Awards program can be downloaded from here.

So if you know of a heritage hero, its time to nominate them. Nominations close on 14 March.
