Nalin and Neha share their memories of Delhi
Born and brought up in Delhi, I love its gardens and historical monuments. Lodhi Gardens is my choice for morning walks. Its eucalyptus-tree-lined entrance boulevard was my first introduction to something Australian. We would pluck a leaf from the tree, rub it between fingers and inhale the refreshing aroma of eucalyptus oil so released.
Humayun Tomb, the building that inspired the Taj Mahal, is on the other end of Lodhi Road. Exploring the hidden corridors of the tombs in these two buildings enchanted my young mind, and their memory still does to this day.

What I love about Delhi: the pageantry (Republic Day and Independence Day events); the history (Old Delhi, and the great Mughal influence in daily life); the shopping (Gurgaon’s mega malls, Karol Bagh’s crowded lanes, Dilli Haat’s authenticism, Hauz Khas’s ‘modern ethnic’); dinner parties that commence at 10pm; ‘aaloo le lo’ lane vendors; fashions that change at the drop of a hat (what, the kameez is above the knee now?!?!); the Metro; cricket at the Ferozshah Kotla; Hanuman Mandir and Bangla Sahib; gardens like Lodhi; nightclubs and swanky new restaurants; golgappas and kulfis at the roadside stalls…and remnants of the British Empire in the form of buildings like Parliament House and Rashtrapati Bhavan which remind me of the power of a simple people – who brought a mighty power to its knees.
